Arielle Newman , a standout cross country and track-and-field star at Notre Dame Academy and member of the Richmond Rockets Running Club, died in her home Tuesday, April 3, 2007.
Among Arielle's numerous running accolades were her back-to-back wins -- 2005 and 2006 -- at the Staten Island Cross Country Championships, which are held at Clove Lakes Park.
On Nov. 18, the talented harrier was the first Islander to cross the line at the New York State Federation Championship meet at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls, placing 81st among the state's 250 top runners.
A little less than three months later, on Feb. 10, Arielle won the 1,500-meter run at the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Intersectional championships at the Armory Track and Field Center, in an impressive time of 4 minutes, 57.33 seconds.
Arielle was named an Advance All-Star in girls' cross country for the 2005 and 2006 seasons, as well as for the 2006 track-and-field season.
Arielle also came in 3rd place overall female in the Sgt. Doreen Scrimenti Race in the tears 2004 and 2005.
